Co-sponsor of Border Food Summit

Co-sponsor of Border Food SummitSeptember 16-18, 10th Annual Southwest Marketing Network Conference – Border Food Summit at Esplendor Resort, Rio Rico, AZ

Mariposa’s Department of Health and Wellness is proud to co-host this important Summit, highlighting the successes and challenges of border food systems from West Texas to southern Arizona. The goal is to activate social justice in our communities by building the capacity of producers individually and collectively, providing tools for farmer allies and advocates to effectively collaborate, and engaging funders and policy makers in food systems change.

Participants can attend one of three farm tours on Sunday, September 16; whether it is exploring food education and distribution projects of Tucson’s Urban Food System, experiencing Rural Farms and Ranches of the Borderlands or learning about the Traditional Foods of the Sonoran Desert (including a desert walk with Ethnobotanist Martha Ames Burgess), these tours will highlight southern Arizona’s local food system.

Monday, September 17 is a full day of breakout sessions, with topics ranging from practical business tools for food producers (including cost analysis and breakdown of pork and vegetable production), new alternative financing models, community approaches to food (including food assessment tools), community-based models and cooperative marketing, and the role government can play.  Monday evening will feature networking, local foods, and local music.

Tuesday, September 18 will engage participants in discussion and action.  What are our next steps and where do we want to go from here?  The day will end with a celebration and “Wine Down” hosted by Cultivate Santa Cruz at the Native Seeds/SEARCH Conservation Farm in Patagonia.
